Mark Sutherland BSc. (Physics) Doctor Dental Surgery
Mark hails from New Glasgow, Nova Scotia. During the summers, he was fortunate to spend time at the family cottage on the warm Northumberland Strait. As a young boy, he was shown how to enjoy a perfect day from his grandfather: golf early in the morning and sailing in the afternoon. While he loves the water, he also loves the winter and downhill skiing. As a young adult, Mark spent time working at Home Hardware, Michelin (curing tires) and a couple of summers for the Canadian Coast Guard (Search & Rescue and Office of Boating Safety).
1995: Graduated N.G.H.S.
FORMAL EDUCATION:
1998: Received his first degree (Bachelor of Science major Physics). During this time, he was a Residence Assistant where he learned a lot about counseling and set up a volunteer Peer Tutoring Program that involved over 150 of his fellow students. “That job allowed me to wear many different hats; experience that has helped me with my practice over and over again.” MS
1998-2002: Attended Dalhousie University Faculty of Dentistry where he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree.
ADVANCED EDUCATION:
2005-2008: Attended the Dawson Centre (now called the Dawson Academy) for many courses whereby I accomplished their CORE CURRICULUM. I learned the true value of why it is important to do an excellent, comprehensive new patient exam. This format is the best exam I’ve seen and allows excellent study for many facets of Dentistry. It helps us design an excellent and appropriate treatment plan for those who need it. They appealed to me because I feel they were well grounded in proper ETHICS and FUNCTION. With good functional bite design comes proper ESTHETICS and dentistry that will hopefully last a long time.
2006: East Coast Endodontic Study Club
2008-2011: Past member of RV TUCKER Study Clubs (http://www.arvtsc.org/). This was further education for the art of gold castings; the longest way to restore and preserve your back teeth from past damage.
2009-2011: Member of AcDc Study Club (Atlantic Complete Dentistry (study) Club). Focus on comprehensive treatment plans, bite problems, etc.
PRACTICE:
2002-2003: Worked with Dr. D.C.T. Macintosh on Spring Garden Road. Dan was a tremendous mentor and teacher and taught me so very much about Restorative Dentistry and the Art of Gold Castings. I am so very fortunate that I was able to spend years watching and then working in Dan’s practice.
2003-2006: Worked in various associate/locum positions (Halifax, Dartmouth, Middleton, Stewiack, Truro) to gain other experiences, learn how different offices were set up and functioned, learn about electronic charting and digital radiography and meeting wonderful colleagues.
2006-present: Purchased former practice of Dr. Mike Kelly. Dr. Kelly did initially move his practice into its current location which was a 100 year old home. Dr. Mark gut renovated the building and turned it into a professional clinic while maintaining the home like atmosphere that many patients love and gives comfort rather than a sterile office.
TEACHING:
I have taught part-time at the Dalhousie Dental Clinic with both 3rd and 4th year students. I have also helped teach 2nd year Cariology whereby students learn to prepare teeth for gold inlays/onlays and crowns.
VOLUNTEER WORK:
2004-2008: Secretary, Treasurer, VP and President of Halifax County Dental Society
2011-2014: Clinical Practice Committee Member for the Nova Scotia Dental Association
2012-Present Help with Discipline Committee for Provincial Dental Board of Nova Scotia
2012 Table Clinic Chair – Helped to Organize Canadian Academy of Restorative Dentistry and Prosthodontics Meeting in Halifax
2013 Fundraising Events for Disabled Sailors of Nova Scotia/New Glasgow Music Festival as well as other great causes.

Elizabeth “Beth” MacLellan
“Executive” Receptionist
Beth came with the practice and had been working for Dr. Kelly for 25 years. She was his receptionist and assistant. She is just a pleasure to be around and is larger than life. I think you will find that you know her through the phone and prior to actually meeting her in person. Don’t be surprised if you get a hug and a kiss at the door and if you hear her laughing all the way through the clinic.

Teanne MacCallum
Dental Hygienist and Clinical Instructor at Dalhousie University
Teanne joined me around Spring of 2009 and we enjoyed her so much we had to find room for her. I often joke that I lifted the house up for her and built her own room in the basement so that she will always feel welcome in our practice.

Halie Hendsbee
Dr. Mark’s Dental Assistant
Hailie joined us in August 2012. We were so lucky when Katie suggested her as Katie was going back to school (good luck Katie!).
Hailie has been a dental assistant since 2010 and was working in another office in Dartmouth previous to our’s.
Hailie hails from a small town in Cape Breton. She moved up to the city in 2009 after graduating from high school where she pursued a course in dental assisting at NSCC.
“I love my career because I am constantly learning and love being part of a team that makes me want to do the best I can. Working with Dr. Sutherland has shown me the positive changes we can make in people’s mouths and the affect it has on them.”

Rae Lynn MacLean
